LEGO, LEGO Everywhere

We were very excited to be invited to take part in the media preview for LEGOLAND Discovery Centre in Vaughan Mills last week which opens March 1st.  I have loved LEGO since I was a kid but now I get to re-live that through my kids.  My son is 7 and he is a huge LEGO fan.  From mini figures to his fave sets of Ninjago and everything in between, he can spend hours upon hours building and using his imagination.  My daughter is 5 and being the girlie girl that she is has totally taken to  LEGO friends.  So you can imagine the squeals of glee when I told them they could come to the preview with me.

IMG_6833

Both up and dressed at the crack of dawn, we were early for the event so it gave us a chance to check out the storefront. ¬†This would have made them happy in itself as the store is great! ¬†The decor is bright and colourful and has cool big figurines constructed all out of LEGO blocks. ¬†We found sets that my son had been looking for, sets that my daughter hadn’t seen yet, super cool key Chains, wall of bricks¬†and the list goes of on and on. ¬†Shopping list for the Easter Bunny….Done! ¬†It’s going to be a LEGO themed Easter at this house!

photo-4     photo-7     photo-6     photo-5

Our tour began as we entered the LEGO man cutout in the wall and into the LEGO factory where you learn through interactive play how raw plastic is turned into LEGO pieces. Here you can also weigh yourself to see how much you weigh in LEGO bricks. No…I will not reveal my number!

My 5 year old daughter’s favourite thing came next…Kingdom Quest. ¬†Hop in a chariot and grab your laser gun to get rid of the bad guys and save the princess! ¬†Your score tallies up as you go so you can see who the ultimate victor in the family will be. ¬†If you’re anything like our competitive family you’ll want to ride again and again.

IMG_6869     photo-3     IMG_6838

Miniland is nothing short of amazing.  Check out the landmark buildings of Toronto as well as the wonders of Niagara Falls all made out of millions of pieces of LEGO.  Play a game of baseball at the Rogers Centre, hockey at the ACC or just marvel at the hours upon hours of work put into this area.

At this point we haven’t even made it into the main play area where even more fun with LEGO awaits us. ¬†In this area you will find an area to build your own LEGO racer that you can race down 2 different tracks, check out the LEGO friends area, play in the LEGO Fire Academy and ride Merlin’s Apprentice. ¬†Be sure to check out one of favourite things in this area, the Earthquake Tables. ¬†Build a tower out of LEGO bricks and test it’s strength and integrity to see if it can withstand the shaking of an earthquake.

IMG_6847     IMG_6858     IMG_6843     IMG_6851

My 7 year old son’s hands-down favourite was the 4-D Movie Cinema¬†where we watched a Clutch Powers Adventure. ¬†Put on your cool glasses, sit back and watch in amazement as LEGO bricks, mini figures and everything else busts out of the screen at you. ¬†Watching the kids in the theatre reaching out to try and grab the flying pieces was amusement in itself.

photo-9     IMG_6855     photo-8

All this LEGO fun can make you hungry so be sure to stop by the Cafe for some eats to re-energize so you can do it all again! ¬†Don’t worry the food is about the only thing not made out of LEGO!

How cool would it be for your child to have their Birthday Party hosted at LEGOland?  Yep, they host parties as well.

You have to check this place out and we can’t wait to go back really soon.

Are We There Yet?

No matter what the age of your kids or whether you are travelling for a 2 hour car ride or 5 hour plane ride, you are bound to hear “Are we there yet?” at least once. ¬†The key is to keep them busy with things they enjoy, introduce new items, play a game or travel when they are bound to sleep. ¬†Now I know the latter is hard to predict so we will focus on keeping them entertained.

Our top 10 items you can bring on a plane or long car ride to keep your sanity…

Snacks –¬†You’re on vacation so you can somewhat throw the healthy balanced meal plan out the window for now right?! ¬†Load some of their favourite candy, chocolate or cookies into your carry on for them to enjoy during the flight. ¬†Suckers and chewing gum are good to have on hand for take off and landing. ¬†Be sure to hide some for the trip home.

Cup with a lid/water bottle –¬†In flight drinks are offered but they generally come in a small plastic cup which when in tight quarters can mean spilling. ¬†Having a close-able drink container means you can have the flight attendant put their drink of choice into a spill proof container.

Electronics –¬†In this day and age, ¬†even the youngest child in the family can probably maneuver and iPod/iPad, DSi, Leapster etc. Load the ipod/iPad up with apps and ¬†music to keep them busy.

DVD player and their favourite movies – Most flights do have movies but having their favourites on hand and¬†accessible can make for a very happy child. ¬†Not to mention it can become useful in your hotel room or at dinners so you too can enjoy your dinner. ¬†Don’t forget to fully charge it before leaving home and pack your charger.

Ear Phones –¬†NO I didn’t say earplugs but hey that’s not a bad idea!! ¬†Bringing earphones from home will ensure they fit your ¬†child’s ears and are adaptable to the electronics you’re bringing to keep them entertained. ¬†Plug the ear phones into any electronic so as to not disturb those around you and your child will think they’re cool to wear

Stories –¬†We all know it’s important to read with your child but sometimes it’s hard to find the time in our busy lives. ¬†Pack some books and snuggle up with your child and have some good quality story time. ¬†Perhaps the story will make them fall asleep so pack yourself a book in case you get a chance to read.

Notepad and pencils РHave your children draw pictures and/or write about their journey so far.  Also this can be used to play tic-tac-toe or hangman

Travel Games – Many of the popular kids games come in travel form like Sorry, Memory, Connect 4, Guess Who, Trouble and more

$ Store Fun Packs –¬†Take a trip to your local dollar store and make a fun pack for each of the kiddies for the way to your destination and back again. ¬†For a small price you can make them a super fun activity pack to keep them entertained. ¬†Stickers, paper, colouring books, stamps, mini craft kit, silly putty, word search books, stencils …. The list could go on and on but I think you get the idea. ¬†Something new and creative will excite them.

Favourite stuffie and blanket РHaving their favourite stuffed friend on board can not only help lessen the anxiety some kids may get with flying but can also give them a cuddle friend if they get sleepy.

Toboggan

One of the funnest activities you can do in the Winter as a family is to go tobogganing. It costs no money, needs very little equipment and it’s hours of fun! ¬†Go to a neighbourhood park or change it up by trying somewhere new.

The key to toboganning is finding a great hill.  Here is a good site www.tobogganhills.com where you can search for hills by location, add your favourite hills, add photos, comment on and rate hills and discuss various different sleds.

Some things to consider when going tobogganing
– Be sure to dress warmly and keep your skin covered as much as possible.
– Depending on hill size it is recommended that children wear helmets
– Pick a hill that it free of trees, away from water and far from roads and parking lots
– Be courteous to other tobogganers and teach your children to walk up the side
– Teach your children to sit properly on their knees or bottom
– Do not overload a sled
– HAVE FUN!

Grab your sled and hit the hills for a fun time with the family!
