Weekend Fun Guide (Feb 15-17 2013)

Happy Family Day weekend!  Celebrate your family this weekend by doing things together and creating memories.  There are many Winter Festivals taking place this weekend or enjoy some time skiing, snowshoeing or tubing as a family!

Around Town this Weekend…


Family Fun Day (Sunday only) – Activities include Free skating: 1 to 3PM, Clowns with face painting 2 to 4PM, Hot dogs, make your own sundae and crafts for the kids!


Frosty Fest – Enjoy the returns of the popular ice carving, horse-drawn trolley rides, figure skating shows, a stree midway, free skating, pony rides, free Kids Zone games and fun winter fare like snow taffy!


Front of Yonge Winter Festival – Family fun for everyone! Childrens games, food, magic show, prizes, silent auction, bake sales, horse drawn wagon rides and so much more. Fireworks and family skate night.


Battle of the Titans @ Royal Botanical Gardens – Dinos like you’ve never seen them before!  In this battle for the ages, you will learn about ecology, the study of organisms and the environment that these majestic creatures lived through so long ago. Get ready to go back in time and see how science and nature come together in one amazing exhibit!


Moonlight Snowshoe Hike @ Crawford Lake Conservation Area – Discover the magic of winter at night, the snow illuminated by moonlight and the stars bright in the night sky. Our knowledgeable guides will lead you on a snowshoe hike through this beautiful landscape. Hikes take place every Saturday evening in January and February from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Each hike begins with basic instruction and some historical background on the sport of snowshoeing.

Season of the Snowsnake @ Crawford Lake Conservation Area – Explore the beautiful snowy landscape on a pair of snowshoes courtesy of Crawford’s rental program. Join staff for guided tours of the reconstructed Iroquoian Village at 11am1pm and 3pm.  Each tour will have a unique focus such as games, archaeology or storytelling.   Warm up after the tour with a complimentary cup of nature’s tea. Children can create a craft or enjoy a discovery hunt from 10am to 4pm.


Winter Festivities – Come join us for the first 3 Saturdays in February. Free skating & music at the outdoor rink, horse drawn wagon rides, ice carving demonstrations, maple candy station, NZone Kids Club at Northumberland Mall and much more.


There’s no better way to spend Family Day Weekend than at Blue Mountain Village!  With lots of free events and activities – there’s something to do for everyone including Skating on the Mill Pond, The Ridge Runner Mountain Coaster, Horse & Wagon rides, Interactive Drumming Shows, Birds in Flight, Guided Snowshoeing Tours, Scavenger Hunts, Firedance Shows & Fireworks!


Winterfest – Great lineup of things for the whole family to enjoy. A great winter carnival with Midway rides and games, public skating at the Ed Lumley Arena, great musical talent inside the Civic Complex to warm up to, and three nights of world-class fireworks are just some of the events on tap at this awesome festival.


Snowball – Snowball also hosts a bevy of winter activities such as a pancake breakfast, skating, snowball throwing game, chainsaw carving demo, minnow races, horse-drawn wagon rides, Mini Snowmobile rides, Snow Snake Games, Children’s Broomball Tournament, hockey shoot-out, kids vs adult hockey game, snowshoe races, Hockey Night in Dorset and more!

Grand Bend 

Winter Carnival – This year’s theme is Superstition.  Join in the weekend of fun filled events including a Parade, horse and carriage rides, puppet shows, fireworks, Snow sculptures, magic show, food, fun and so much more!


Frostfest – Starting with a Pancake breakfast at the Haliburton Legion Hall to warm the soul, this day is geared for excitement for all ages including horse drawn wagon rides, snow taffy, art activities, pony rides, dogsledding, skating,ice fishing demo, snowshoeing, broomball and lots more. End the day with a tasty Lasagna Dinner at the Haliburton United Church.


Kidsfest @ Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum – Bounce, laugh & play in this family day weekend in Southern Ontario’s largest indoor inflatable festival. Children’s entertainment, rides, kids market place, & full access to the museum.

Honey Harbour

Winterfest – Winterfest  features a hot Georgian shore-lunch of deep fried fish & fries, hot-dogs, beans, cole-slaw with warming drinks, ice rink activities, snowshoe lessons, a student art exhibit and a big Raffle with great prizes donated by local businesses in support of the Co-op’s activities.

Kirkland Lake

Winter Carnival – 18 days of winter fun including sleigh rides, hockey tournaments, free kids matinees, kids carnival, free family swims, fishing derbys and more!

Niagara on the Lake

Days of Wine & Chocolate – Warm up your winter with this match made in heaven! Explore pairings of two of your favourite indulgences – wine and chocolate, as you tour the Wineries of Niagara-on-the-Lake.


WinterActive – Winter Active is designed to help Orillians improve their health while having fun enjoying the best of Canada’s winter. The idea is to encourage residents to ‘Get up, go out and be Winter Active!’ Take part in a cardboard toboggan race, enjoy a skate party, play snow volleyball,  take part in some winter games or enjoy some of the many other activities.


Winterlude – A unique winter festival featuring snow and ice sculpture competitions, snow playgrounds, skating, sporting events and let’s not forget the world’s largest skating rink. Celebrate the joys of winter at Winterlude, with three fun-filled weeks in February. Canada’s favourite winter activities are featured across Ottawa and Gatineau at this annual event.

Frosty Fortunes @ The Currency Museum –  See how our country’s chilliest season has influenced the art and design of Canadian currency throughout history. Each weekend during Winterlude, you and your family can come and enjoy cool crafts, games and presentations, all inspired by this frosty time of year. We’ll even have some nice hot cocoa and coffee to warm you up from the chill outside. Admission is free for the whole family.


Winterama –  A celebration of Canadian seasonality, Winterama is an opportunity to renew an interest in outdoor activities including sleigh rides, hockey, animals, magician, live entertainment, snow sculpture competition, food and more!

Port Colborne

Sportsfest – It is a city-wide, family-friendly, community Festival of Sports event that attracts participants from across Niagara, with proceeds going to various charities.  The Mayor’s Cup Hockey Tournament, indoor volleyball, family skating, ball hockey, trivia and family skating are just some of the events that are traditionally offered to the public

Port Elgin

Sparkle in the Park – Join us at MacGregor Point for winter experience like no other. Be it the interpretive programs, snow shoe & cross country ski trails or the outdoor skating oval through the campground, enjoy all winter has to offer at MacGregor Point Provincial Park.

Thunder Bay

Voyageur Winter Carnival @ Fort William Historical Park – Carnival events include Sugar Shack, Tubing & Sliding Hills, Snow Maze, Winter Golf, Scavenger Hunt, Skating & Curling On The Kam River, Carnival Games, Dog Sled Rides, Cannonball Bowling, Snow Ball Slingshot And So Much More!

Ultimate Dinosaurs @ ROM –  Giants from Gondwana, presented by Raymond James, features dinosaurs you’ve never seen before, displayed in ways you’ve never seen. Check out this world premiere exhibit featuring Dinosaurs unknown to North Americans – most have just been unearthed in the last 20 years.

The Natrel® Rink at Harbourfront – Tucked away behind York Quay Centre and set against the beautiful shore of Lake Ontario, the city’s most scenic rink awaits! Nature Walk @ Rouge Park – Rouge Park invites you to join us for a guided walk along many of Rouge Park’s trails and discover parts of the Park you might not have visited yet, or learn and share a bit more about your favourite spot in the Park. Whether it’s a Sunday stroll, a fitness walk, a family outing, wildlife spotting or just to get out on the trail, we have the outing for you! With trained leaders to guide the way, we promise you’ll have a ‘natural’ Rouge Park adventure!
