Weekend Fun Guide (June 14-16 2013)

Here comes the weekend!!  There are a variety of cool and unique festivals taking place this weekend that will entertain the entire family.  Check out what’s happening in Ontario and find something fun to do with your family!

Thinking about taking in a movie with the family this weekend?  Check out what’s playing on Saturday mornings at Cineplex theatres for their Family Favourites.  At 11:00am you can watch a movie for only $2.50!  You can also load the family into the car and head to a drive-in near you for some family fun!

Around Town this Weekend…

Bala

Muskoka Fest – Come out to Windsor Park on June 15th to this family geared event. There will be wakeboarding, barefooting, and a ski show. Plus many different vendors!

Barrie

Innisfil Summerfest – The 18th Annual Summerfest includes a Kids Fishing Derby, Crafts, Retail & Food Vendors, Midway and Entertainment all weekend long.

Family Fun Day @ Barrie Core Wellness Centre – Come join us for Family Fun Day! There will be a Bouncy Castle, Dunk Tank, Carnival Games, Face Painting, Prizes, A Man’s Corner and More!! All proceeds go to Camp Quality Southern Ontario to help send kids with cancer, to camp for one week with all the needed items. Hope to see you there!

Belleville

Quinte Rodeo – Rawhide Rodeo will be making a stop in Belleville as part of their North American Tour.  Cowboys and Cowgirls from 4 Countries will
be competing for spots in the Oklahoma City finals.  There will be Bareback bronc riding, steer wrestling, tie down roping, bull riding, team roping, ladies barrel racing and saddle bronc riding.

Burlington

Sound of Music Festival – Take the family to Canada’s Largest FREE Music Festival this weekend. Enjoy live concerts featuring all types of music – Jazz, Rock, Folk, Pop, Blues, Latin, Big Band, Celtic, Country and Children’s Entertainment – spread out over 10 performance areas throughout Burlington’s Downtown and Waterfront.

Brampton

CeleBrampton – Join the kickoff to summer in downtown Brampton!  There are so many great events including: a free bbq and family fun, entertainment, kids zone, fit zone, bike rodeo and it finishes off with a great parade of floats and marching bands!

Brockville

Tall Ships 1812 Tour – Join us, as ten tall ships sail in to Brockville from June 14th to the 16th. You won’t want to miss all of the excitement that they are bringing with them. The weekend will not only include the arrival of the  tall ships but there will also be deck tours and sailing dinner tours, live entertainment, rare breed animals, antique boat showcase, farmer’s market, Wine & Food festival, fireworks & more

Cobourg

Highland Games – Bring the family and enjoy the Pipe and Drum Solo competitions, Pipe Band Competitions with 25 Pipe bands competing, administered by the Pipers and Pipe Band Society of Ontario, Ontario Highland Dance competitions and Heavy Event competitions on the beach.   If you like shopping, there will be many Scottish and Celtic merchandise and food vendors in which to shop.

Georgetown

Festival on Main – Coinciding with the farmer’s Market, this years festival will have something for everyone.  There will be a balloon artist, a stilt walker and unicyclist, Wandering entertainers, caricature artist, bouncy castle, mighty machine, face painting and more.

Hamilton

Hamilton Air Show – This is a family event to get close up to many different aircraft and also watch them zoom through the sky  It is one of Canada’s largest airshows featuring the Snowbirds, CF-18 Hornet, de Havilland Mosquito and Avro Lancaster

Keene

17th Annual Father’s Day Smoke & Steam Show – Enjoy the largest show of its kind in the Kawarthas! Local collectors bring to life some of the oldest antique tractors and steam engines around. See fully operational, unique, working examples of the earliest gas and “hit and miss” engines as well as Lang’s own 1921 Sawyer Massey Steam Engine.  There will also be music, demonstrations, a parade, and fun things for the kids!

Kemptville

Ribfest – A FREE  fun filled family food Festival!  Come taste the gooey ribs from all the different ribbers while you watch live bands, cheer on at the rib eating competitions and the kids can do activities in the kidz zone.

Keswick

Open Ropes @ ROC – Come see what The ROC Challenge Course has to offer!  This one-day Open Ropes Event will take participants to the next level – LITERALLY!  Participants will be given the opportunity to experience the elements and enjoy an outdoor adventure at a discounted rate.  Adventure Passport Available for $5.00 per person (6+years)  Experience 2 elements (based on availability)

Kincardine

Teddy Bear Parade @ Victoria Park – KIDS!! Decorate those wagons, strollers or yourself, and come on out and march in the Teddy Bear Parade!

King City

King City Festival – (Saturday) A fun festival for the entire family with Skate Park event hosted by Sanction Skate Shop, KC Firefighter Demonstrations, Lions BBQ, Kids Bouncy Castle Fun Zone, vendors and ice cream.

Kitchener

Bike Safety Fun Day – Children aged 14 and under can participate in the bike safety course – bring your bike and helmet.
Entertainment by Erick Traplin, bike inspections by Brauns, win a new bike, face painting, jump castle, mini golf, hot dogs, cany floss and much more.

Maker Faire – The Waterloo Mini Maker Faire will be taking place June 15, 2013, at Kitchener City Hall. This is a free event, and will appeal to Makers of all age groups and interests.  Maker Faire is the Greatest Show (and Tell) on Earth—a family-friendly showcase of invention, creativity and resourcefulness, and a celebration of the Maker movement. It’s a place where people show what they are making, and share what they are learning.

London

Kids Expo – Kids Expo features free activity zones, paid amusement rides, food vendors, exhibits, and live entertainment including The Win Wheel Game Show, Corus/Sony Music recording artist Brooklyn Roebuck, and Captain Corbin. The Win Wheel is a game show where all contestants leave with a prize. This festival is enjoyed by 50,000 people.

Markham

Music Festival – From rock and roll to classical, from country to hip hop, you’ll find a sound to please your ears. As well as music, the Markham Village Music Festival features amateur and professional entertainers from Markham, York Region and the GTA. See dancers, jugglers, clowns and much more!

Midland

Buttertart Festival – So you think you make the best buttertarts in Ontario?  Well, here’s your opportunity to prove it!  Professionals and home bakers were invited to enter their buttertarts into this finger-lickin’ smack-down!  In the Assembly room of the Midland Public Library, kids of all ages can participate in Butter Making a craft with the BIA’s very own, Nicole DiPinto proprietor of Grounded Coffee, who is becoming famous for her amazing crafts.  Just outside of the library, while munching on Northern Kettle Popcorn, you will be entertained by The Amazing Frank Clarkson

Milton

Teddy Bear Picnic @ Country Heritage Park – (Saturday) Children of all ages will enjoy the bouncy castles, pony and wagon rides, petting zoo, and access to the historical buildings. Bring your own picnic or purchase food on site.

Railway Quest @ Halton County Radial Railway – Test how much you know about streetcars and museum! Venture around the museum to answer the list of questions about the display cars, barns, or the East End Loop. The winner with the most correct answers will win a prize! Bring the family and see how much you know (or learned) during the Quest.

Mississauga

Waterfront Festival – If you’re looking for music, lights, interactive play, arts & crafts, vintage cars, and a whole pile of fun for children of all ages… come to Mississauga for The MWF!  Super fun events going on all weekend long!

Niagara Falls

Fireworks over the Falls – Canada’s longest-running fireworks series is underway with fireworks every Friday, Sunday, and holiday until September 1, preceded by the popular Coca Cola Concert Series on the Victoria Park Stage. The best views are in Queen Victoria Park overlooking Niagara Falls.

Niagara on the Lake

Strawberry Festival – (Saturday) Celebrate the annual Strawberry Festival on the grounds of St. Andrew’s Church. Enjoy strawberry shortcakes, pies and family activities.

Ottawa

Carivibe – CARIVIBE is an annual celebration of Caribbean culture in the Nation’s Capital. Join us at Petrie Island for Canada’s Largest Caribbean Beach Party. Thousands of people of all ages will enjoy 9 hours of non-stop entertainment and plenty of Caribbean cuisine. There will be a licensed tent for adults, an all-ages section for teens and a Kiddies Carnival village for children filled with bouncy rides, inflatables, face painting, mascots and games.

Parry Sound 

Dragon Boat Festival – Fun games for children, music, food, vendors and more than 150 volunteers and numbers of spectators and participants make Waubuno Beach a great place to be on race day

Perth

Art in the Garden – Art in the Garden showcases artists and crafts people among the extensive and mature display beds at Kiwi Gardens. Stroll through the walkways and exotic plantings to find all handmade works of art. On display are such items as garden sculptures, obelisks and arbours, blown glass, outdoor furniture, wind chimes, pottery, and various other pieces of unique garden art. There will also be tasty food and beverages, live music, and plenty of benches to rest and enjoy the view

Peterborough

Taste of Downtown on Charlotte Street – The street will be closed down so you can enjoy tastings from local restaurants while enjoying the musical entertainment by Pop Machine.  Stores will be open for you to shop at the giant sidewalk sale and be sure to join in the fun at the Shoe Toss for Charity.

Rockton

Father’s Day Steam and Machine Show @ Westfield Heritage Village – Featured are steam engines, antique machinery, railway displays and demonstrations. Enjoy steam traction engine rides and tour over thirty historic buildings.

Sudbury

Downtown Rotary Blues for Food – Come listen to great music and support the Sudbury Food Bank.  Scheduled events include Manitoulin Transport, Children’s Play Zone, Free Wagon Rides, Family Entertainers, M&M Meat Shops BBQ and Refreshment Tent

Tillsonburg

Turtlefest – Our festival is based on a legendary promise by Tillsonburg’s founder, George Tillson, to return one day as a turtle to see how his town was prospering. Several years after his passing, a giant turtle was found on the banks of the Otter Creek near the Tillson homestead. Remembering his promise, Tillsonburg citizens brought the turtle to the downtown area & everyone was invited to come and see “George” and let him know how the town had prospered. It’s been over a hundred & thirty years since this event and Tillsonburg is still growing.

Toronto

Rogers TV Open House – Propose your own show idea or event coverage, meet our staff and volunteers, take a studio tour and learn all about our TV production training sessions. Plus you can enter for your chance to win a SONY HD action camcorder.

Father’s Day @ Canada’s Wonderland – Treat dad to the best day ever with in-park specials and family-fun this Father’s Day. Roncy Rocks – On Saturday June 15 Roncesvalles Village will come alive with local music and art. Great local bands including Oh Susanna, Big Rude Jake, and the Monkey Bunch will entertain, and dozens of local artists will display and sell their works, and local merchants will be on the street in an all day sidewalk sale.

Father’s Day at Toronto Zoo – Why not bring Dad for a day at the Zoo and meet some of our WILD Dads including Brutus (Capybara), Inukshuk (polar bear) and Bucky (babirusa)

Wasaga Beach

Kitefest – Come out to the beach and watch the kites fly!  Or maybe you think you have what it takes to win? There wil be prizes for largest kite, best laundry line display and best ground control.

Welland

Strawberry Feast-ival – (Saturday) Fun for the whole family!  Everything strawberries…face painting, strawberry creations, strawberry kabobs & cupcakes, berrylicious culinary contest, strawberry pancakes, strawberry eating contest and outdoor games and activities.

Windsor

DadFest @ Heritage Park Alliance Church – A special service will be held from 10:30AM to noon which will be followed by family fun activities including: Beach Volleyball, Bouncy Castle, Car/Motorcycle Show, Face Painting, Family Picnic-Style Games, Kids vs Dads Soccer Match, Live Music with a Guest Musician, Photobooth, Wagon rides and Fantastic Food (burgers, hotdogs, fresh cut fries, vegetarian pasta, pop and ice cream)

Burgerfest @ Riverside Sportsmen’s Club –  Burger lovers rejoice! Windsor Essex finally has a festival to celebrate the beloved hamburger.The first annual Burger Festival will take place on June 15 & 16 at The Riverside Sportsmen Club in Windsor Ontario. The event is filled with lots of family fun, great entertainment and one of the largest assortments of hamburgers ever assembled in Windsor Essex in one place. Proceeds to support the Unemployed Help Center Food Bank and Operation Help the Hungry.

Summer Fest – Summer Fest is the annual event in Windsor, ON downtown that signifies the start of summer. This year’s dates are June 13 – July 1. Highlights include the Tug Boat Race on June 22, The Rediscover the Riverfront by bike on June 23, Summer Fest Riverfront Fireworks Party June 24, the Summer Fest Weekend Concert Series June 16,23 and July 1, World’s Finest Shows Midways, and it all Wraps up July 1 with the spectacular Canada Day Parade, Giant 5000 Piece Cake and The Symphony of Sound and Light

Carrousel Around the City – Travel the World without ever leaving Windsor!  Visitors can delight in the tastes, sounds and traditions of these cultures as they present the greatest music, dance, history, art, and especially the food of their country.  One warning – once you start indulging in Polish pierogis, German sausages, Italian pasta, and Romanian pastries – it will be difficult to stop!

Oxford Renaissance Festival – The Oxford Renaissance Festival brings excitement to both the old and young at heart. Come out and enjoy live music, interactive games, jousting, authentic reenactments, amazing performers, vendors and lots of good food.
